Phil Kelly & the Northwest Prevailing Winds
featuring Pete Christlieb, Andy Martin, and Gary Smuylan
Origin (82417)
If you think Julia Childs, Emeril Legasse, and Wolfgang Puck can cook, then
you’ve gotta listen to Phil Kelly & the Northwest Prevailing Winds. This is
one cookin’ big band! Phil’s writing on this CD, covers the gambit, from the
tenderest love songs, to the swingingest big band sounds. The tenor sax of
Pete Christlieb, Gary Smulyan, trombone Andy Martin, and trumpet Jay Thomas, are
obviously influenced by this great writing, as it is with the finest musicians
in the Northwest playing his charts.
In addition to more than 40 years as a composer / arranger for film, TV, and
other media applications, he has written for bands like Bill Watrous NY
Wildlife Refuge, the old Tonight Show band, Doc Severinsen, Si Zentner, as well as
functioning as arranger/ conductor / drummer for vocalists Buddy Greco, Mel
Torme, Oscar Brown Jr., Julius LaRosa, Frank DeRone, Sylvia Syms, John Gary,
Marilyn McCoo, Jenny Smith, Mike Douglas, and Al "TNT" Braggs among others...
Listen to the sound bites below, and see if this isn’t one of the finest big band
CDs this year.
